"As usual with Chekhov the story is dense with emotions and conflicting relationships but what surprised me is that Chekhov made the Doctor speak as though he was a green activist of today. Mikhail Lvovich Astrov is extremely concerned by the damage caused to the environment by the excessive use of trees in building and to generate heat. He believes it will ultimately destroy the earth. This is still true today of course, especially if you replace the word "tree" with "petrol". With this message the play should attract a brand new set of spectators!"
